All trains are identified with a train reporting number
to identify the individual service.
It consists of:
The numbers for the train classes apply to all regions, however the destination area codes and the individual train numbers are specific to the region or area. The codes used for this meeting are described in the following paragraphs.
1 | Express passenger train Used for far distant trains, coming from or going to London, Glasgow, Birmingham. |
2 | Passenger train Used for passenger trains that run local. Plymouth is considered local to Penzance, for example. All stations on the layout arrangement are treated as local too, regardless how far apart the real location might be. |
3 | Newspaper/Parcel train Used for parcel trains that run from and to the mail hub in Bristol. |
4 | High speed fright (Freightliner) Used for freight trains that are allowed to run at 75 mph (120 km/h). |
5 | Empty coaching stock Used for empty passanger trains that come out or run to a yard. |
6..8 | Freight train Used for local freights. The higher the number the slower the train. |
9 | Eurostar Not used. |
0 | Light engine Used to move motive power to a location, were it is needed. For runing a shunter from "Cambrian Road" to "Penzance" and vise versa this train class is used too. |
C | Trains to Penzance Used for trains originating from London and Bristol. |
F | Trains to Plymouth Used for trains that run to "Fiddle yard", ie. far away, but still in Western Region. |
N | Local trains around Penzance Used for passenger trains that run very local around Penzance, ie. to and from Uig. "N" is used to denote the northern aspect of the "Skye Branch". |
T | Trip workings Used for short freight trips. |
V | Trains to Western region Used for trains originating from Midland or Scottish region. |
X | Special Trains Used for the steam specials. |
A | Trains to London area |
M | Trains to London Midland region Reserved for future use. |
S | Trains to Scottish region Reserved for future use. |

The abbreviation DO stands for "Driver Operated", i.e. tasks the driver has to do at unstaffed stations.
